The St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department hosts the “13th Annual Bartram Bash” at Alpine Groves Park on May 13, 2017. This family-oriented event is a birthday celebration for American naturalist William Bartram, who explored the St. Johns River extensively in the late 18th century.

This year’s event will include an Audubon Guided Bird Walk at 8:30 a.m., a session of yoga at 9:00 a.m., and bluegrass and square dancing at noon. There will also be a presentation by Mike Adams at 10 a.m. and a ceremony honoring this year’s Stetson Kennedy Foundation Fellow Man and Mother Earth Awards at 11:30 a.m.

Alpine Groves Park contains the partially restored house and grounds of a late 19th century homestead, along with a citrus grove set among live oaks and magnolia trees. Set on a bluff overlooking the St. Johns River, the 54-acre park is a designated destination on the Great Florida Birding Trail and is known for its amazing butterfly garden.

Admission is free.
